Ship chartering company first to be charged under Section 17 of MACC Act today

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 — A company providing ship rental services here has become the first commercial organisation to be charged under Section 17A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, since the law came into force on June 1 last year.

MACC, in a statement yesterday said the director of the company has been called to assist in the investigation.

The suspect, representing the company will be charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court today.

According to Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009 (Amendment 2018), commercial organisations are liable and can be punished if their employees or associates are involved in corruption crimes.

Meanwhile, the statement said a former director of the same company has been detained for allegedly giving bribes of RM312,350 as a reward for being awarded a subcontract for ship rental in oil exploration works.

The 64-year-old man was detained today at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

He will be charged at the same court tomorrow, under Section 16 b(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for giving bribes to secure contracts for ship rental.

The offence was alleged to have been committed between June 29 and Oct 14 last year, involving a RM1billion project.
