Burgernita helps generate income for women

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — The implementation of the movement control order (MCO) used to be a difficult period for single mother, Aminah Mat Yusof, 41, when she lost her source income as a food caterer.

The mother of three, however, did not want to be idle and decided to join the Burgernita business introduced by the Malaysian Icon Women’s Club.

Although the roadside burger business is normally carried out by men, Aminah finds it an easy business to sell as the burger is a popular food among all levels of society.

“I joined this business after losing my source of income as a food caterer due to the implementation of MCO. Alhamdulillah, I have been able to sell up to 40 burgers a day since opening the burger stall last month,” she said when met after the launch of Burgernita, here.

Aminah is among 15 Burgernita participants who started the business in Ampang, Selangor, last month.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Icon Women’s Club chairman and president, Datuk Normaziah Sheikh Mohamed said Burgernita is an integrated business model created to provide fair business opportunities for women, especially single mothers and those in the B40 category.

She said the business was introduced in an effort to help and empower women who were affected by various economic and social challenges.

“This idea came about in March 2020 during the implementation of MCO after seeing many of those in the affected groups lost their source of income due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The burger business was selected after studying and examining the current economic and market conditions which are seen to be able to generate income continuously,” she added.

According to her, every woman who joins Burgernita will be given a burger stall, as well as training and guidance.

“We aim to open 700 Burgernita stalls nationwide within three years. Currently, we have 15 Burgernita stalls in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Terengganu and Kedah,” she added.
