MDKS: Viral painting at Kuala Selangor art gallery work-in-progress, painter told to complete mural

SHAH ALAM, April 20 — A mural painting in Kuala Selangor depicting three naked women that had circulated on social media yesterday is a work-in-progress and was only 20 per cent complete as of 7pm last night, says the Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS).

Its president Rahilah Rahmat in a statement today said following the sharing of the viral content, the local council had ordered the painter to complete the sensitive part of the mural within three hours.

“The painting was 40 per cent complete at 10pm (last night) and is expected to fully complete by April 26.

“MDKS takes the matter seriously… we would like to also remind artists to be careful and be wary of the local sensitivity when producing work of arts and refer to the local council beforehand,” the statement read.

Yesterday, an online portal had reported the mural painted on the exterior wall of the Sasaran Art Gallery Kuala Selangor in Kampung Sungai Buloh, Kuala Selangor, to have caused a public outcry, especially among the Muslim community.

The mural was said to be a part of the preparation for an international exhibition to be held at the said art gallery.

The Sasaran Art Gallery Kuala Selangor is a community project by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Sasaran Arts Association, which had organised large-scale international art festivals every three years since 2008.

The art gallery is one of the tourist attractions in the Kuala Selangor district.
