GOMBAK, April 16 — The state government is on the right track by producing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) entrepreneurs who are able to survive despite the economic recession.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said traders created through the Hijrah Selangor programme has become the country’s economic joint, especially in Selangor, to buffer the global uncertainty.

“We want to produce entrepreneurs who do not need a cane (assistance) from the government, for example how South Korea was able to survive when it was hit by the currency crisis and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) pandemic in the past.

“Success in overcoming global uncertainties is supported by the strength of SMEs that continue to contribute to the country’s economic stability,” he said at the Hijrah Selangor iftar programme at the Al-Hijrah banquet hall here yesterday.

He said the humanising economy policy (dasar merakyatkan ekonomi) introduced by the previous administration was no longer suitable and was replaced with targeted assistance.

“In the past, we gave to all the people without finding out whether they really needed help, this resulted in those who are not eligible to receive it.

“Now we get involved in what they wanted, so we help the target group to expand the business that they are interested in doing,” he said.

Commenting further, Amirudin suggested that entrepreneurs who have successfully teamed up with the state government to help traders affected by Covid-19.
