All schools under MOE in Selangor to close from May 6 until after Aidilfitri — MB

By Ida Nadirah Ibrahim

SHAH ALAM, May 5 — All public schools in Selangor will be closed beginning May 6 following the re-implementation of the movement control order (MCO) in several districts in the state.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the closure of schools is implemented across the state, including the districts that are not under the MCO, namely Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam.

“I have contacted Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin twice today and during the MMKN (State Executive Council) session earlier, he had informed that the Selangor State Health Department and the (education) ministry had agreed with the approach.

“Therefore beginning tomorrow, all Sekolah Kebangsaan in Selangor, daily schools and also the schools under the supervision of Selangor Islamic Religious Department… and we hope that the private schools would also be able to follow the closure order until after the Hari Raya holidays or after the PdPR (home-based teaching and learning) session,” said Amirudin during a special press conference on the reinstatement of the MCO in six districts in Selangor broadcast live on Facebook today.

Amirudin said the decision was made considering there are two schooling days left when the MCO begins tomorrow.

“The (Hari Raya) holiday is supposed to begin on the 10th (of May). There are only two (schooling) days during the MCO period on May 6 and 7. We also found that schools are still at high risk.

“We would like to thank the education minister, the KKM (Health Ministry) and Education Ministry to allow the schools (in Selangor) to close beginning May 6, which will continue until the Hari Raya holidays, the semester break and after the PdPR session,” he said.

Meanwhile, when asked if kindergartens are allowed to operate, Amirudin said there is no closure order for kindergartens unless there is an update from the federal government.

“We allow kindergartens to operate so that the parents can go to work… there is a need for it,” he added.

Yesterday, Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced that six districts in Selangor will go under the MCO effective May 6 until May 17.

The affected districts are Hulu Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

On April 26, Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin had said that PdPR for all schools will be conducted for two weeks after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri school break.

It will be implemented from May 16 to 27 for group A schools ( in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) and May 17 to 28 for group B schools (in Perlis, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka , Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya).

After the PdPR period, students will continue their term holidays from May 28 to June 12 for group A schools, and May 29 to June 13 for group B schools.
