Covid-19: 5,803 new cases recorded Saturday — Health DG

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The number of new Covid-19 cases in the country has surpassed the 5,000 mark for four consecutive days, with 5,803 cases reported over the last 24 hours.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said with the latest development, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia now stood at 728,462.

In a Twitter post, he said Selangor still recorded the highest number of daily cases at 2,108; followed by Negeri Sembilan (741); Kuala Lumpur (628); Sarawak (491); Melaka (355); Johor (329); Pahang (220); Sabah (189); Kedah (186); Penang (160) and Perak (137).

Kelantan recorded 103 cases; Labuan (99); Terengganu (29); Putrajaya (24) and Perlis (four).

In a statement, Dr Noor Hisham said out of the total number of new cases, 5,793 cases were local transmissions while 10 cases were imported cases.

Local cases involved 4,433 citizens and 1,360 non-citizens, while imported cases involved three citizens and seven non-citizens, he said.

In addition, the number of recoveries today was lower than the new cases with 5,193 cases, taking the cumulative total to 662,932 or 91 per cent, while the total number of active cases stood at 60,646.

Dr Noor Hisham said 866 patients were being treated at intensive care units with 435 of them requiring respiratory assistance.

The death toll rose to 4,884 following 81 new fatalities recorded today, which involved 78 Malaysians and three foreigners aged between 38 and 87, with a majority of them suffering from chronic diseases, he added.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry also detected 14 new clusters today, nine of which are workplace clusters, detention centre (two), community (two) and one high-risk cluster, namely the Changkat Intan cluster in Perak.

The workplace clusters are Industri Tanjung Suria, Tapak Bina Cybersouth Utama, Industri Jalan Enam Salak Tinggi in Selangor; PLO Jalan Perak and Perindustrian Bukti Bakri Satu (Johor); Tapak Bina Pintasan Segambut (Kuala Lumpur); Jalan Usaha Jaya (Penang); Industri Serkam 2 (Melaka) and Bandar Rantau Panjang (Kelantan).

Meanwhile, the detention centre clusters are Penjara Jalan Harapan 2, Gombak (Selangor) and Tembok Tawau (Sabah); while the community clusters are Nyelutong (Sarawak) and Permatang Pasir Bachok (Kelantan).
