India Covid-19 cases surpass 30 million, concern expressed over new strain of virus

NEW DELHI, June 23 — India’s total coronavirus cases surpassed 30 million on Wednesday as the country reported 50,848 new infections in a 24-hour period.

The number of daily deaths was 1,358, taking the total death toll to 390,660, according to Health Ministry data.

Although India has witnessed a declining trend in Covid-19 cases in recent days, there is concern over the new Delta Plus virulent strain.

The federal government has alerted the states of Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh about the new strain after many cases were found in the samples from those regions.

Calling it a “variant of concern”, the government asked the states to take up immediate containment measures, enhanced testing, tracking and vaccination in the districts where the Delta Plus strain was detected.

Delta Plus is the new mutant strain of the Delta variant first found in India and carries increased transmissibility.
