Report: Selangor records highest number of senior citizens

SHAH ALAM, June 16 — Selangor has registered the highest number of elderly persons in the country, Sinar Harian reported today.

According to the Pocket Stats Selangor Quarter 1 (ST1) 2021, the demographic data of the state in 2020 issued by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) showed that a total of 366,240 individuals or 5.6 per cent of the 6.54 million population in the state are senior citizens.

As for the working age, Selangor recorded a total 4.7 million people, with 1.5 million in the youth group.

While Perak has recorded the highest percentage of senior citizens at 11 per cent, the total number in population stands at 276,000 people out of its 2.51 million population, the Malay daily reported.

In terms of sex ratios, Selangor is the fifth-highest, with 107 males per 100 females registered.

Malaysia has recorded a total of 32.7 million population in 2020, where 16.8 million are male and 15.9 million female.
