SHAH ALAM, June 3 — A construction company was ordered to stop non-critical construction work that it had carried out during the total lockdown period under the movement control order (MCO).

Selangor Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) director Suhaimi Mansor said a drone was used during their spot-check operation on a construction site that is building 51 units of terrace houses in Teluk Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat yesterday.

He said pictures from the drone showed that the construction workers were not practising social distancing, thus a raid was immediately carried before the contractor and the workers are able to escape.

“Further investigation revealed the company was operating without a letter of permission from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) and do not have a permit from the local authority to build workers’ housing,” he told SelangorKini.

Suhami said a stop-work notice was issued and an investigation was opened under the CIDB Act 1994 which if found guilty, the contractor could be fined RM500,000 apart from having its license suspended.

“CIDB will continue its inspections to ensure that only critical construction works are conducted during this MCO,” he said.

During the 14-day total lockdown starting Tuesday, all construction work is not allowed except work listed under critical service.

The exceptions include critical maintenance and repair work that could cause danger or harm if not continued, including slope repairs and traffic management controls.

In addition, major and critical public infrastructure construction work; consulting services for construction work is allowed to operate as well as services in the supply chain for construction work.
