Selangor to reveal special aid for affected groups next week

By Khairul Azran Hussin

SHAH ALAM, June 2 — Selangor will be announcing special assistance next week aimed to help the people in the state that are affected by the total lockdown enforced yesterday until June 14, which sees the closure of several economic sectors.

Its Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the move was initiated to ensure no one is left behind during the implementation of the full movement control order (MCO).

“We are formulating and reviewing the kind of aid to be channelled to the people. Several stages of discussion have to be carried out before an announcement is made,” he said after the launch of the Agro Prihatin programme at the Selangor State Secretariat building here today.

Putrajaya had on Friday announced the first phase of the 14-day total lockdown, which had barred all social activities and only allowed a few essential economic activities to resume.

The ruling imposed is a measure to flatten the Covid-19 curve following a sharp rise in the daily number of cases since early April.

Since the first implementation of the MCO last March, the Selangor government had introduced several stimulus packages, starting with the Selangor Cares Package (Pakej Selangor Prihatin) with a total allocation of RM127.78 million channelling aids to frontline workers, students and small traders.

Selangor state assemblymen had each received a total of RM30,000 funds to help the people in their respective constituencies who were affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

The state administration had then on April 1, 2020, announced the second phase economic stimulus package worth RM272 million to cushion the impact of the pandemic.

The following aid was revealed on January 20 to ease the burden of those affected by the MCO 2.0 with a financial implication amounting to RM73.877 million.

The package includes intensified efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and stimulate the state’s economy, including providing assistance to the affected groups.
