Food-related issues among causes of domestic violence in Selangor

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, July 3 — Failure of wives to serve delicious food to husbands is among the reasons for complaints on domestic violence cases reported in Selangor during January to September last year.

Although it sounded ridiculous, records from Selangor Social Welfare Department (JKM) showed that 20 to 30 per cent of the 254 cases of domestic violence reported involved this issue.

Selangor Wanita Berdaya (WBS) chief executive officer Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki said the lack of food supply was the cause for such cases following constraints from the movement control order (MCO) implementation.

“There are cases where the husband got so angry that he is willing to throw a plate at the wife because the food cooked is not tasty and done in a simple style with only fried eggs as the dish.

“It is not logical for the husband to do so when they should be the one responsible for providing foods and drinks to their family. Just because he is desperate and hungry, he only knows how to get angry,” she said when contacted.

Elaborating further, she said other complaints reported involved financial problems, high debt, job loss and difficulty in applying for assistance provided by the government.

“We have identified that the majority of those who make complaints do not have a high level of education. Maybe it is normal for us, but it is a big problem for them,” she added.
