Selangor health dept busts sale of illegal traditional Chinese medicine in PJ

SHAH ALAM, July 7 — The Selangor Health Department (JKNS) pharmaceutical services enforcement officers confiscated 101 boxes of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) called Lianhua Qingwen Jiaonang worth around RM2,500 from a premise in Petaling Jaya (PJ), Selangor last Thursday (July 1).

According to state health director, Datuk Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman, the raid was conducted after a tip-off by members of the public and this was the second seizure of the product since October 2020.

“The unregistered product claims it is a treatment for Covid-19. Without monitoring by a registered doctor, continued use could cause adverse effects,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said an investigation will be conducted based on the Sale of Drugs Act 195 which carries a maximum fine of RM25,000, jail term of three years or both.

JKNS advises members of the public to check that health products and cosmetics are in compliance with the law before buying.

Product registration numbers and notifications can be found at npra.moh.gov.my or call the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) at (03) 7883 5400 for more information.
