Three local councils urged to procure body cameras to ease enforcement officers

By Sheeda Fathil

SHAH ALAM, July 14 — Three local councils in Selangor have been urged to have their own body camera equipment as a safety measure for its enforcement officers.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the local councils in discussion are the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) and Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB).

“I call upon the said local councils to immediately complete the procurement process and hopefully, by year end, all of the enforcement officers in the 12 local councils would be able to start using body cameras.

“Aside from the safety aspect, the use of this equipment is very important as it would be useful to provide proof should there be any physical assault or disputes happening while the officers are on duty,” Ng said while contacted by SelangorKini.

Furthermore, Ng said the cost for the equipment is less than RM1,000 per unit, therefore there is no issue on affordability.

He said, as of now, there are 276 body cameras owned by nine local councils, namely Shah Alam City Council, Petaling Jaya City Council, Subang Jaya City Council, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, Klang Municipal Council, Selayang Municipal Council, Sepang Municipal Council, Hulu Selangor District Council and Kuala Selangor District Council.

On June 22 last year, Ng said all the local councils were given time until the year end to implement the use of body cameras by their enforcement officers.

This move was taken following an incident where an enforcement officer was beaten by a woman on February 6, 2020, after her car was towed in an incident at Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh in Seksyen U20.
