Employees empowerment unit to close gap between state, Federal govts

SHAH ALAM, Aug 27 — The state government has set up the Selangor Workers’ Empowerment Unit (UPPS) to bridge the gap between its departments and agencies with the Federal government.

State executive councillor for socio-economic development and workers empowerment V Ganabatirau said the Federal government’s Labour Recalibration Programme on rehiring illegal foreign workers made the role of the state government less relevant.

“Therefore, the State Executive Council Meeting (MMKN) on August 18 decided to set up this unit to help resolve issues involving employers and employees.

“Although this (workers’ empowerment) portfolio was only established last year, it still requires inputs on the direction and programme planning, as well more opportunities, because this will enable the state government to be included in the planning of Federal programmes that involve local authorities, departments and agencies,” he said.

He said this during the winding up of the question and answer session at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here, yesterday.

The Kota Kemuning state assemblyman also requested the cooperation of all state assemblymen in strengthening the career programme organized through UPPS.

On August 13, Ganabatirau announced that he would strengthen the workers’ empowerment portfolio to help those who lost their income due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to him, among the steps that need to be taken is to increase the allocation to help the affected group whose numbers has been increasing in recent times.
