MB: State budget to be tabled year-end, focus on balancing development, welfare

SHAH ALAM, Aug 19 — The 2022 Selangor Budget is expected to be tabled during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sometime end-November or early December, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said the state budget would focus on the development and welfare of the people following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will try to find the perfect balance in both of the elements post-pandemic,” he told the media during a virtual press conference broadcast live on Media Selangor Facebook today.

Amirudin said the welfare of the people has been one of the state administration’s focuses during the pandemic and has now become one of its top priorities.

“(Due to the pandemic), there are people in the M40 group who has fallen into the B40 category. At the same time, those in the B40 group may be swelling up to become B50 or B60 categories.

“We need to carry out a detailed analysis on this… We will continue to strengthen and enhance the welfare of the people in the state,” he said.

Amirudin said that the state government would reveal its plan to jump-start economic activities for the financial sector, focusing on several aspects, such as addressing employment issues.

“We will focus on areas that would create new jobs and move up the economic chain and move out much faster from the current economic restraint,” he said.

Amirudin said that the state’s economy was severely hit during the first and second movement control order (MCO), followed by restriction orders enforced by the Federal government.

Meanwhile, on the upcoming Selangor State Assembly sitting, which will convene from August 23 to September 6, Amirudin said several motions would be made, such as to amend the rules of the State Legislative Assembly to hold a hybrid meeting during uncertain times such as during the current Covid-19 outbreak.

He said the plan to propose an amendment to the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor to make way for the implementation of the Undi18 for those aged 18 and above to vote in the next general election could not be made in the upcoming session.

“Based on the advice from the State Legal Advisor, the proposed amendment requires further consultation from relevant parties and will be proposed in the next sitting,” he said.

Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj is scheduled to grace the opening ceremony of the State Assembly sitting on August 23.

Amirudin said due to the current Covid-19 situation and the standard operating procedures (SOPs), routine activities conducted during the opening of the state assembly, such as the opening parade, photography session, and the luncheon, will not be held.
