Pollution averted, Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant resumes operation

By Selangor Journal Team

SHAH ALAM, Aug 31 — The Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has resumed operations after raw water samples tested at the river had recorded 0 TON (Threshold Odour Number) three times in a row.

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) said it would take 14 hours before water supply can be distributed to users as the Sungai Semenyih WTP has to undergo cleaning works. Water supply to affected users is expected to fully restore within 36 hours.

“We will update the water restoration plan of the affected areas tomorrow at 7am.

“Air Selangor has mobilised a total of 94 water tankers to users and critical premises affected by the unscheduled water cuts.

“Air Selangor understands the consumers’ need for clean water, especially during the increase in Covid-19 cases,” said Air Selangor corporate communications head Elina Baseri in a statement today.

Elina said Air Selangor had also activated a mitigation plan to distribute alternative water supply from the Langat 2 and Labohan Dagang WTPs to areas in Hulu Langat and Kuala Langat.

This involves distribution of alternative water supply in stages to consumers in Kajang Baru, Kajang, Semenyih and Beranang Hulu Langat as well as Jenjarom, Teluk Panglima Garang and Pulau Carey in Kuala Langat.

“Efforts are in place to minimise the impact of disruption to the affected consumers,” the statement read.

Elina added that Air Selangor and the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) are currently identifying the source of pollution along Sungai Semenyih and its tributaries.

Earlier today, odour pollution was detected at the Jenderam Hilir Raw Water Pump Station at 11.10am, leading the Sungai Semenyih WTP to cease operations temporarily.

The temporary closure of the Sungai Semenyih WTP had caused a total of 463 areas in five Air Selangor regions, namely Petaling (172 areas), Hulu Langat (54 areas), Sepang (194 areas), Putrajaya (23 areas) and Kuala Langat (20 areas) to experience unscheduled water supply disruptions.
