MB: Services sector showed positive growth, other sectors badly impacted by Covid-19

By Alang Bendahara

SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — As most economic sectors in the state registered negative numbers due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the services sector continues to show positive growth results.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said restrictions enforced by the Federal government to curb the pandemic during the movement control order (MCO) had badly affected most economic sectors in the state.

“The economic sectors which are badly affected are the industrial and manufacturing, construction and agriculture.

“However, the services sector such as the e-hailing and other services showed positive impact from the MCO implementation,” he told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.

Amirudin, who is also Sungai Tua state assemblyman, attributed this to the services such as delivery and supply becoming more important during the pandemic.

“Services such as forwarding and supply to places has now become a solution, on how we live and move the economy during the bad economic time,” he said when answering an oral question on the bad economic impact on Selangor from Sungai Burong state assemblyman Datuk Mohd Shamsudin Lias today.

Amirudin said the pandemic had also affected the collection of the state’s revenue this year.

“As of August 20 this year, Selangor had successfully collected RM1.53 billion or 69.57 per cent of our targetted revenue of RM2.2 billion for 2021.

“Yet last year, by October and November, the state had managed to collect 100 per cent because in the first three months before the MCO was enforced, we had collected 50 per cent out of the targetted RM2.2 billion of revenue,” he said.

However, Amirudin said the state had implemented several measures to ensure the state’s revenue collection process is not interrupted during the pandemic.

“We have implemented smart box and drop box at the District and Land Office, as well as promote digitalisation, to reduce the impact on the state’s revenue and economic activities,” he said.
