Shah Alam Stadium upgrade begins next year

By Amin Ridzuan Ishak

SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — The 20-year-old Shah Alam Stadium will have a new look soon through a total upgrading of the sports complex that will begin next year.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this is included in the proposed redevelopment of the stadium’s surrounding area that was initiated by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

According to Amirudin, the cost of upgrading the stadium, which was opened in 1994, is expected to cost up to RM350 million based on the Public Works Department’s assessment.

“The stadium began to deteriorate after it was affected by a big flood in 2006 which caused damage to the system underneath it, its maintenance was also high resulting in us losing RM5 million, and even RM8 million.

“After years of doing small repairs, it is time for us to do a full upgrade on the stadium,” he said on the Tiga Talk online talk show last night.

The Shah Alam Stadium, which can accommodate 80,000 spectators, cannot be used at the moment due to damages to its roof structure.

In the 2021 Selangor Budget in October last year, Amirudin announced that the area surrounding the Shah Alam Stadium will be rejuvenated into a Youth and Sports City at the cost of RM8 billion.

He said the project will be developed via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and will use the Green Urbanism concept, in line with a sustainable environment and smart city.
