Study: Intention to receive Covid-19 vaccine higher amongst older age groups

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The intention to receive Covid-19 vaccine is higher amongst older age groups who are more vulnerable to severe illness from the virus, according to the ‘Perception Towards Covid-19 Vaccine’ study.

The study, which was jointly undertaken by Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University, and Universiti Sains Malaysia, stated that 88 per cent of those in the 60 years and above age group are likely to get vaccinated as compared to 68 per cent in the 18 to 30 years age group.

Ipsos Malaysia in a statement today said the study was conducted among 804 Malaysian adults aged 18 years and above from June 11 to 20, and that the sample was collected via an online panel, and skewed towards the more urban, connected population.

Besides that, the study showed higher intention among females with 88 per cent as compared to males at 79 per cent, adding that the result might be attributed to women being more health-conscious than men.

“Nevertheless, it is concerning that 21 per cent of males; 32 per cent of the 18 to 30 age group; and 24 per cent of the lower educated group are either unsure or have no intention to get vaccinated,” said the study.

It also revealed that youths had a lower proportion of a positive attitude towards vaccination as they are less likely to get cues from their peers who have a lower intention to get vaccinated.
