Sultan Selangor decrees state assembly opening ceremony to be held briefly

By Amin Ridzuan Ishak

SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has decreed for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly opening ceremony to be held briefly next Monday following an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Speaker Ng Suee Lim said the opening ceremony will only involve a Royal Address by the Sultan of Selangor, after which the meeting will be adjourned, as the inspection of the military guard-of-honour and group photo session with the state assemblymen, had been cancelled.

He said the number of guests during the session is limited to less than 200 people and the assemblymen are not required to wear the official attire during the ceremony.

“For Muslims, the state representatives can wear national attire and for the non-muslim, they can wear a suit and ‘songkok’.

“The rules would enable us to control the standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he said during a press conference at the Annex Building here, today.

Ng said all the state representatives, government officials and media practitioners are required to undergo a Covid-19 swab test prior to the assembly which will be held for nine days until September 6.

“We will provide the Covid-19 self-test kit to all the state representatives and they are required to do the test at least once every two days. This is to ensure the assembly can be held smoothly as we do not want to experience the same outbreak that happened at the parliament,” she said.
