Different roles of Luas, Air Selangor in managing water resources

SHAH ALAM, Sept 22 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) and the Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) are two different entities that manage water resources for the consumer in Klang Valley.

In a short video prepared by Luas, the state government agency educated the public on their function and roles.

“Luas is a statutory body under the state government which is responsible to manage raw water resources including surface water such as rivers and ponds, groundwater and three nautical miles of coastal water from land to sea.

“Its function is to manage water resources in terms of quality, to comply with the suggested raw water quality standard, and to ensure the quantity is sufficient for treatment, as the treated water supply by the treatment plant at all times.

“Meanwhile Air Selangor, formerly known as Syabas, is a state government subsidiary which processes raw water into treated water and supplies it to consumers in Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur,” according to the two-minutes duration video.

Luas’s roles:

  1. Managing water resources (raw water) in terms of quality and quantity
  2. Licensing and abstraction charges for the water source 
  3. Licensing and charges for the release or entry of pollutants into water sources
  4. Written approval for water resources conversion activities
  5. Licencing and navigation charge for inland water route
  6. Licencing and diversion charge of water resources for electric generators

Air Selangor’s roles:

  1. Raw water treatment at Water Treatment Plant
  2. Supplying treated water to consumers
  3. Water bills payment
  4. Conducting matters related to the water supply interruption to consumers
  5. Repair work on broken or leaking pipes
  6. Registration and change of water metre account holder’s name

According to the video, the public can reach out to Luas to report any suspicious activities which could potentially lead to any water pollution incidents.
