SHAH ALAM, Oct 7 — The maintenance works for critical assets at the Phase 1 Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant (SSP 1) will smoothen the water distribution process to consumers in the future, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He explained that the works, which are scheduled to start next week, will prevent future damages to the treatment plant.
This is one of the three factors that have disrupted services to consumers, alongside an insufficient supply of raw water and incidents outside of anyone’s control, including pollution and burst pipes caused by a third-party.
“Thus with this maintenance, we can prevent the factor of a damaged treatment plant. With one less risk, asides from raw water, we will not experience supply disruption,” he said during a press conference earlier today.
Amirudin added that the failure of the treatment plant in Wangsa Maju was due to it being unable to handle the overcapacity, which resulted in the disruption of the water processing machine.
“In 2018, the plant’s pumps exploded as it was unable to stand the stress, which led to a week of water disruption. So we do not want this to reoccur and injure someone.
“This is to prevent explosions, damages, and treatment plant failures which frequently happen,” he said, in reference to the problems faced by the state government’s administration from 2008 to 2013.
Amirudin hopes the public in the Klang Valley will be more understanding of the state government’s decision to conduct maintenance and upgrade works at the SSP 1, for the future’s sake.
Recently Air Selangor has requested the residents in 998 areas including Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat, and Kuala Selangor keep sufficient water reserves at home, in anticipation of the scheduled water disruption.
Some 105 water supply lorries will be mobilised alongside 18 public water pipes, which will be prepared from October 14 to 16, for the convenience of consumers during this time.
Works are scheduled to begin at 9am onwards on October 13, and are expected to end by 9pm on October 16.
