Free Internet for a year for 1,000 Selangor farmers

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 — Up to 1,000 farmers will be given SIM cards complete with free Internet service for up to a year, as part of the state government’s education initiatives.

State exco for agriculture and agro-based industry Izham Hashim said the recipients will receive 45 gigabytes of data a month.

“We had a quota of 2,000, but only 1,000 applications were received. Perhaps some thought it was limited to farmers only, whereas it would also include livestock breeding, fishing, and food-based industries.

“Nonetheless many applications were made by farmers in the north of Selangor. The remaining quota may be handed to other divisions instead,” he said during the Pakej Kita Selangor 2.0 handover ceremony at Dewan Terbuka Taman Sri Setia in Tanjong Karang yesterday.

On August 4, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said up to 70,000 Selangorians will receive SIM cards with free Internet for 12 months.

The target of the initiative is the Tuisyen Rakyat Selangor programme, Yayasan Selangor scholarship holders, and students of Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor and Universiti Selangor.

It is also applicable to Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Teknikal Negeri Selangor students, traders under the e-Bazar Selangor programme, farmers, and single mothers.
