Selangor not the highest in corruption as arrests have dropped, said Menteri Besar

SHAH ALAM, Oct 1 — Selangor has recorded a drop in corruption-related arrests and charges in the past five years, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said that based on the numbers recorded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Selangor cannot be considered the highest as only 43 arrests were made as of this August, compared to 79 in 2016.

“If we look at it from these numbers, it is not Selangor but states in East Malaysia which recorded the highest numbers. In fact, based on the percentage of residents, the density, and economic rapidity, this percentage clearly indicates that Selangor is not a hub of corruption.

“Perhaps sensational news and the like gave rise to this perception. Nonetheless the state government always encourages better arrests and investigations of corruption perpetrators should they be found guilty, as there is a need to be fair and a chance provided to defend one’s self,” Amirudin said during the live broadcast of the discussion “Is Selangor A Hub of Corruption?” yesterday night.

He added that he has a positive view of society’s vigilance and care on the issue, which is on the rise and has led to reports being filed, along with arrests and prosecutions made.

“This is interesting, and touches my heart as during the 1990’s corruption was considered the norm.

“I believe this awareness and positive change should be followed by actions and steps including the Corporate Integrity Pledge, and the establishment of the Integrity and Risks Department at Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) last year.

“Corruption still happens, but if the people look at it on the whole as a pandemic and take the right steps from the gift-giving system, monitoring, auditing, and enforcement, it can be handled and reduced,” Amirudin said.
