Water cut needed to upgrade equipment to preempt malfunctions

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SHAH ALAM, Oct 11 — The water cut planned for many parts of the Klang Valley tomorrow is to enable Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) to replace several important pieces of equipment at the Sungai Selangor Phase 1 Water Treatment Plant.

If the equipment is not replaced, leaks can occur at any time, and will result in unscheduled plant shutdowns, said Air Selangor Northern Territory Production Department head Zulkifli Abdul Hamid.

He explained that should Air Selangor’s equipment unexpectedly break down, a lot of time will be needed to carry out repairs, causing great difficulty for customers, especially factories that need water to run their operations.

“The maintenance work will involve the replacement of three filtered water pipes measuring 1,200 millimetres (mm) in diameter each, as well as butterfly valves and switches measuring 1,450 mm and 1,350 mm at the treated water pumps.

“It also involves drilling the treated water pool and balance pool, cleaning the pool and repairing leaks found on the 2,100 mm diameter treated pipes,” he said through a video uploaded on Air Selangor’s Facebook.

Zulkifli explained that maintenance work is important to ensure that the state’s largest water plant with a capacity of processing 950 million litres of water per day stays efficient and able to provide a sustainable supply of treated water to consumers.

“This work has been delayed twice, on July 23, 2019, and April 14, 2020, due to pollution incidents at the Sungai Selangor water source. Large-scale water supply disruptions happened at that time,” he said.

The works will affect residents in 998 areas in the districts of Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor.

Air Selangor will be mobilising 105 water tankers to the affected areas and provide 18 public water taps from October 14 to 16 for customers in need of water supply during the period.

The Selangor government will also mobilise volunteers at the state constituencies, as well as Team Selangor, Selangor Volunteer (Serve), Selangor Local Youth Movement (PeBS) and village heads to help those affected.

A complete list of the affected areas, public water taps, and local water filling stations can be obtained at hentitugas.airselangor.com.
