Selangor expects more foreign tourist arrivals next year

By Sheeda Fathil

PETALING JAYA, Nov 23 — The state government is targeting more foreign tourists to visit Selangor as soon as the international tourism bubble opens.

However, the state executive councillor for tourism said no targets were set on the number of local or international tourists visits to Selangor next year as the number of Covid-19 cases is still high.

According to Hee Loy Sian, tourist arrivals into Selangor, especially from abroad, have declined with 3.3 million recorded in 2019, and decreased further to 1.57 million last year.

“We have not set a target for tourist arrivals to Selangor next year but we hope that after the government opens the borders, more international tourists will visit this state,” he said.

He said this at the launching of the Pusing Selangor Dulu Travel Fair and Selangor Global Tourism Convention 2021 at the New World Hotel in Petaling Jaya here today.

Despite the relaxation of various restrictions on travelling, Hee reminded the community to continue adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) when on holiday or leisure.

At the same time, he called on local authorities (PBT) to take stern action against any individual who violated the SOP.

“We hope visitors will not get too excited when travelling that they forgot about the SOPs, also the local authorities must continue with the strict enforcement to ensure the public complied with the rules,” he said.
