Selangor’s e-commerce merchant awards breaks own record

By Alang Bendahara

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — The sixth edition of the Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards (Top ECM) 2021 has broken its previous record in the number of participants and gross merchandise value (GMV) generated.

Selangor state executive councillor for industry and trade Dato’ Teng Chang Khim had announced the achievement during the Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC) 2021 opening ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, here today.

“213 merchants applied for the one and only e-commerce competition in Malaysia, with 181 qualifying to participate.

“We are expecting accumulated sales, totalling RM40 million in GMV, will be created during the campaign.

“Both are record-breaking figures that demonstrate the strong growth of e-commerce in Malaysia, between 30 to 40 per cent for the past year,” he said in his welcoming speech.

The Top ECM is organised by Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec).

It features four award categories: the Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards, Online 100 & Brands 100 Merchant Awards, Selangor E-Bazar Merchant Awards, and the Affin Bank Rising Star Awards.

Last year’s awards saw 162 submissions, with 123 shortlisted.

In 2019, 128 submissions were made, with 99 participants making the shortlist. The awards’ GMV in 2020 stood at RM36.6 million and RM12.9 million in 2019.

This year’s Top ECM offers RM40,500 worth of cash prizes and other attractive accolades. Teng added the main three winners would participate in the event’s first-ever Livestream Marathon on December 12 as part of their reward.

Each winner will be given one hour to live stream their products or services on Sidec’s Facebook page, with the live streaming costs fully sponsored by Sidec.

Teng also announced that 20 top startups from the top three accelerator programmes in Selangor would compete in Pitch@Selangor 5: Selangor Super League tomorrow. The programmes are Sidec, ScaleUp Malaysia, and Sunway iLabs.

“They will compete for the top three spots to win cash prizes worth RM30,000 and an opportunity to participate in Expo 2020 Dubai,” he said.

The Selangor Super League will also feature sharing sessions by Equity CrowdFunding platforms, including Elain Lockman of Ata Plus, William Lien of Mystartr, and Chan Wei Chi of pitchIN.

“I hope the audience will thoroughly enjoy the SDEC convention and learn from the best to accelerate your digital transformation,” Teng said.

The SDEC 2021 was officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, which was held in conjunction with the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2021.
