Cash aid helps flood victims rebuild lives

SHAH ALAM, Dec 29 — The RM1,000 cash aid from the state government has lifted the spirit of flood victims seeking to rebuild their lives that were affected by the incident.

Aid recipients from Kampung Kubu Gajah in Sungai Buloh said the assistance under the Selangor Bangkit programme has helped to ease their suffering.

Nuri Zati Adnan, 32, said she would use the cash aid to buy new appliances.

“Yes, the money may not be sufficient to replace everything we had lost but it helps to reduce our burden. During the flooding, the state government helped in providing food, and now, we received RM1,000 in cash and a cooking stove,” she said.

She said this after receiving the assistance that was handed over by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari at Dewan MBSA in Paya Jaras Tengah, here yesterday.

The assistance was distributed to them a day earlier to allow the flood victims to purchase their necessities faster.

Meanwhile, a senior citizen Mohd Zahar Bahaman, 67, describes the cash aid as very meaningful as he stays alone and suffers from diabetes.

“The flooding has destroyed all of the home appliances and I have to replace them. NowI can use the cash aid from the state government to buy new equipment. Thank you to the state government for their concern,” he said.

On December 21, the Selangor government allocated RM100 million in funds under ‘Selangor Bangkit’, due to the flood incident last week.

Apart from infrastructural recovery, the initiative also covers cash aid of RM10,000 to the families of flood victims who perished in the incident.

The RM1,000 cash aid also will be distributed to the heads of families to help restore their homes and cover damages.

Torrential rain from December 17 until 19 resulted in double the rainfall compared to the previous high of 180 millimetres, which caused severe flooding in several locations in Selangor.
