Selangor passes bill to lower representative candidacy age to 18

SHAH ALAM, Dec 6 — The Selangor State Legislative Assembly has passed the Selangor State Government Body (Amendment) Bill 2021, which will reduce the age limit for qualified citizens to become representatives from 21 to 18 years old.

The amendment was passed following unanimous support from all assemblymen during the voting session.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari thanked all the assemblymen and Speaker Ng Suee Lim who were responsible for supporting and accepting the amendment.

“Thank you Speaker and the assemblymen who debated throughout this time to amend Law-Article 63 on the age limit of voters and the electees in the next election.

“If we do not amend, the federation has the ability to maintain in implementing this law. But for the sake of solidarity, it is the responsibility of all to support and accept this amendment, which has been accepted by nearly all states as well,” he said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting earlier today.

Following the sitting when met outside, Ng the amendment is a new page for Selangor, in which youths will be recognised and enabled to contend in the next general election.

“We have heard the voices of the youth, and we will ensure the participation of as many as possible, in line with Undi18 and candidates as well.

“There may be some who are not ready, there are different perspectives but in the Assembly it seems we all agree, be it the government or Opposition. Everyone was unanimous,” he said.
