SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 — The rainfall in Selangor has increased by two folds to reach 380 millimetres (mm) compared to its highest record of 180mm and its average rainfall of 60mm, says Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Citing data from the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department, he said the unusual rain from 10am yesterday which continues today and still going on in several areas, was also compounded by the high tide level in affected flood areas that had reached up to 4.5 metres.

“As a result, 134 water gates have to be closed due to the high tide to avoid water from overflowing to the residential areas located near the water gates.

“In addition to that, a total of 93 water pumps are fully operational to speed up water flow to the river drainage system. This is to control the ongoing flood incidents in five districts in the state,” he said in a statement, today.

He added that the state government through the Selangor Disaster Management Unit has decided on six measures, in which some have already been implemented and several others will be executed as soon as possible.

“First, the safety of flood victims remains our top priority. Hence, as of 5pm today, a total of 46 temporary relief centres (PPS) have been operated in Klang, Petaling, Sepang, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor with current evacuees standing at 3,582 people.

“All of the PPS are equipped with basic necessities such as clothes, foods, hand sanitisers, face masks and cubicles.

“Second, all of the victims will go through periodical Covid-19 screening for free to curb the outbreak at the centres. A specific PPS will be provided for the victim who has been infected with the virus.

“Third, all of the state government assets as well as from related agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Army will be deployed to assist in relocating the victims and distribution of basic necessities.

“Fourth, I have also asked Pengurusan Air Selangor (Air Selangor) to provide mobile water tankers for the use of the evacuees at the PPS.

“Fifth, all of the efforts and assistance will be coordinated by the 24-hour Smart Selangor Operations Centre (SSOC), located at the State Secretary Office in Shah Alam.

“Lastly, the state government also will mobilise the volunteers from Team Selangor and Selangor Volunteers (Serve) to help the process of relocating the victims to PPS and to help with the cleaning process after the high tide has receded,” he said.

Amirudin added the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecasted that continuous heavy rainfall will last until tomorrow in Selangor.

“Therefore, I ask the residents in the affected areas to follow the advice from the safety team and be on standby should they be required to evacuate their houses and relocate to the nearest PPS,” he said.
