Selangor to identify foreign investors, expand halal industry

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Dec 16 — Several potential foreign investors have been identified as Selangor’s strategic partners in expanding the halal sector, said state executive councillor for halal industry Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.

He said a few companies from various countries including Turkey and China will sign the memorandum of understanding (MoU) as soon as Malaysia’s borders reopen.

Although Selangor has an array of halal products, Mohd Zawawi said it  needs a third party to help market the product on the world stage.

“We are in contact with investors for the MoU signing. God willing, once Malaysia has opened its border, we will proceed with a strategic relationship.

“In fact, there are several Muslim entrepreneurs in China, with some also operating in Malaysia, willing to be our partners and invest in the halal sector,” he said during a press conference after the Selangor Halal Industry Media Familiarisation Trip at Mardhiyyah Hotels and Suites yesterday.

Also in attendance was Halal International Selangor chief executive officer Mat Ghazali Mohd Rakim and Selangor Media Association secretary Nuar Md Diah.

Mohd Zawawi added the Dubai Expo, in which Selangor will also participate when it commences in March next year, will be the best platform to develop more networking with investors, aside from introducing local halal products.

“All of the government-linked companies as well as big companies will be involved in the expo, with the aim of seeking strategic partners and to promote halal products. Hopefully there will be room for us to expand the industry,” he said.
