Taman Sri Muda sluice gate operational again, flood waters to go down

SHAH ALAM, Dec 22 — The sluice gate of the river nearest to Taman Sri Muda in Section 25 began operating once again, to reduce its flood water level.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the gate is operational due to the eletricity and generators from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

“Yesterday the Shah Alam City Council and soldiers worked hard until 3am to move the submerged vehicles which were blocking the generator, as they brought it to the sluice gate.

“With the gate operational, the flood waters will recede much more quickly,” he said on Twitter.

Yesterday state executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said the flood levels in Taman Sri Muda were slowly receding, since the sluice gate was stuck closed at the time.

Approximately 80 per cent of the flood water has been drained from Taman Sri Muda, using 16 pumps by the Drainage and Irrigation Department, starting at 2am today.

The area was one of the worst hit in Selangor, with many homes still filled with water, down from the record height which exceeded six feet.

The unusual rainfall between December 17 and December 19 saw twice the amount of rainfall, which previously stood at 180mm, causing many locations in the state to become flooded.
