Workers’ hostel in Meru to be developed, centralising their location

MERU, Dec 14 — A foreign workers’ hostel will be built in Meru, as part of the effort to accommodate the comfort of the surrounding local residents.

Meru assemblyman Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar said this comes after a series of discussions with glove manufacturer Top Glove Sdn Bhd (Top Glove), who have agreed to the idea.

“Meru faces many issues related to the large number of foreign workers as well as scattered settlements, since the area has become an industrial hotspot. As a result, local residents have become dissatisfied with this turn of events..

“Therefore we proposed that Top Glove build a specific settlement for their workers. To this, several locations have been identified and the construction will begin soon.

“This measure prevents the spread of infectious diseases which may be spread to local residents,” he said, after handing over the donation from Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) to 49 storm incident victims in Meru yesterday.

Mohd Fakhrulrazi added he will ensure that sundry shops or restaurants operating within the hostels are being managed by locals.

On August 30, state executive councillor for trade and investment Dato’ Teng Chang Khim said a new initiative will be introduced in the new industrial area, which allows investors and manufacturers to systematically manage workers’ welfare.

He said the initiatives include the development of worker’s hostels, aiming to centralise them within the industrial area.
