SHAH ALAM, Jan 1 — Nearly 3,000 metric tonnes of post-flood waste were collected by KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) in Taman Sri Muda here, yesterday.

Its managing director Ramli Mohd Tahir said the figure is based on the 220 lorries mobilised for the cleanup process in the area.

“Yesterday (December 30), we managed to collect nearly 960 metric tonnes of waste, and when we increased the capacity by three-fold, we managed to collect around 3,000 metric tonnes of solid waste.

“Apart from 220 lorries with a 7.5-tonne capacity, we also rented 32 lorries with 10-tonne capacity to transport the rubbish to the transfer stations (TS), as well as 38 backhoes and a manpower of 400 workers,” he said when overseeing the cleaning operations in Taman Sri Muda, yesterday.

Ramli said due to the large areas in Taman Sri Muda that were affected by the flooding, KDEBWM has divided the neighbourhood into four zones with four TS in each zone.

“We had only managed to reach the area on December 25 after the water had slowly receded. Then only did we realise that Taman Sri Muda is a vast area with 9,700 homes and 179 factories.

“As of now, 50 per cent of solid waste in the vicinity are cleared, and we hope to complete the cleanup operation within a week,” he said.

As of Thursday (December 30), the cleaning process in Taman Sri Muda has reached around 35 to 40 per cent.
