SHAH ALAM, Jan 22 — A company was fined RM60,000 by the Sessions Court in Klang yesterday after it was found to have conducted construction activity and recycling used plastic solid waste without the approval of the Selangor Environment Department (Selangor DOE)

Selangor DOE director Nor Aziah Jaafar said the company was charged for conducting activities without providing an approved environmental impact assessment (EIA) report.

“The company also failed to provide a written notice to JAS on installing equipment which proved to be a source of air pollution.

“Judge Razali Ariffin passed the sentence after the company’s director pleaded guilty on the charges brought forth,” she said in a statement.

Nor Aziah added the company is accused of committing both offences on August 11, 2020, at a premise in Taman Perindustrian Pulau Indah, Port Klang.

“The company is charged under Section 34A(2) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and Regulation 5(1)(b) of the Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Regulation 2014, under the same Act,” she said.

Nor Aziah said construction and recycling used plastic solid waste falls under the First Schedule of the Environmental Quality (Prescribed Activities) (Environmental Impact Assessment) Order 2015, in which an EIA report must be presented to and approved by JAS beforehand.

“I thank the public for helping to provide information on activities which pollute the environment.

“Environmental pollution activities can be made at the toll-free line 1-800-88-2727 which operates on a 24-hour basis, send an email to [email protected], or reach out to JAS’ e-complaint portal at eaduan.doe.gov.my,” she said.
