Innovative project in Hulu Selangor rounds up eight tonnes of recycled items

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — An innovative recycling project initiated by the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS) has gathered a total of eight tonnes of recycled goods within one year.

The recycled items were collected via the Trash for Cash (Sisa Jadi Dana or Sidina) pilot project involving areas in Kuala Kubu Baru, residential areas in Desa Melor Serendah, Taman Adenium, Bukit Beruntung, and Jalan Inai, Bukit Berunting, and Taman Rajawali, Kalumpang.

MPHS president Mohd Hasry Nor Mohd said that the highest amount of recyclables collected was recorded at Taman Adenium residential area with a total of 2.5 tonnes.

“The Sidina programme had prevented 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the air,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Hasry said that the innovative project aims to retain environmental sustainability and income generation through recycling activities.

Under the purview of the Department of Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing, the campaign was launched on August 16, 2020.

“The final goal of the programme is to reduce the trash transferred to the landfills and for the public to generate income from recycling.

“The money received can be used to pay assessment taxes. In other words, pay up the tax for making trash,” said Mohd Hasry, adding that the local council aims to expand the initiative to the next level.

Yesterday, state executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian launched the smart recycling centre at Taman Adenium in Bukit Beruntung.
