Malaysian Road Safety Plan launched to improve safety, protect road users — Wee

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 27 — The Malaysian Road Safety Plan (PKJRM) 2022 – 2030 was launched to improve safety and protect the welfare of road users, with a vision towards ‘Malaysia, A Country with Zero Road Accident Deaths’ said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.

Wee said PKJRM 2022 – 2030 emphasises 10 safety aspects, including effective monitoring and evaluation, safer motorcycle riding, speed management, and safe work travel.

“PKJRM 2022 – 2030 has a multi-pronged approach to improve discipline and advocacy as well as enforcement,” he told a press conference after launching PKJRM 2022-2030 and an Integrated Ops in conjunction with the Chinese New Year 2022, here today.

Based on statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), 418,237 road accident cases were recorded in 2020 with 4,634 deaths, while 255,532 road accident cases were recorded involving 3,302 fatalities, as of September 2021.

“Every road accident that occurs will not only pose a risk of injury or death but will also lead to high economic losses either in infrastructure repairs, compensation payments, or on medical costs,” he said.

In the meantime, Wee said the ministry through the Road Transport Department (JPJ), government agencies, private companies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were committed to continuing the Road Safety Campaign & Integrated Ops themed “Pandu Cermat, Sampai Selamat”.

He said the campaign this year emphasised four key programmes namely education and advocacy, enforcement, prevention and monitoring as well as evaluation.

On the road safety campaign and integrated operations in conjunction with Chinese New Year 2022 from January 25 to February 8, Wee said a total of 2,200 JPJ enforcement personnel were mobilised to inspect buses, as well as monitor and patrol roads.

Wee said the Driving Prohibition on Goods Vehicles Order would be enforced on January 30, January 31, February 3, and February 4, to avoid the risk of road accidents.
