SERDANG, Jan 12 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has advised Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) graduates to always uphold the Constitution and the rule of law as well as be a responsible and high-integrity citizen.
His Highness also reminded the graduates to refrain from committing any acts of misconduct that could tarnish their family’s reputation as well as the country’s image and dignity.
“I wish to urge graduates to endeavour to raise the dignity of their parents, family and the country to a higher level with the knowledge they have acquired,” he said when addressing the 44th UPM Convocation Ceremony, here, today.
Sultan Sharafuddin, who is also UPM chancellor also touched on the role of the university which was not only to produce high marketibility graduates but also equip them with skills to become responsible, courteous and trustworthy individuals who always uphold the ethical principles and moral values.
“Such graduates will be a blessing to others and ensure a sustainable future. The graduates will not only achieve the academic success but also in terms of possessing positive personality traits,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sultan Sharafuddin said that the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Strategic Plan 2021-2025 which was launched in December last year is capable of strengthening the university as a knowledge tower that drives excellence.
His Highness said under the strategic plan, UPM focused on five key strategies, namely driving high technology agriculture; building the character of UPM graduates; pioneering smart campuses and digitalisation; ensuring the continuity of a sustainable institution and inculcating new norms.
In this regard, Sultan Sharafuddin called on all UPM staff, students, and university alumni to support the implementation of the strategic plan.
“It is understood that the university management always implements continuous improvements to further excel as a tower of knowledge by enhancing the quality of teaching, research and professional services to society,” he said.
At the ceremony, His Highness also proclaimed the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah; Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ir Muhamad Zohadie Bardaie and Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim as UPM Pro-Chancellors for a three-year period from October 18, 2021 to October 17, 2024.
He also presented the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award to Aini Nazihah Hasin@Hassan (Bachelor of Science in Physics with Honours) Faculty of Science; the Royal Education Award (Bumiputera) to Putera Mohamad Iskandar Jamil (Bachelor of Science in Horticulture) Faculty of Agriculture; and the Royal Education Award Non-Bumiputera) to Chow Heng Yee (Bachelor of Science in Human Development) Faculty of Human Ecology.
The Selangor Sultan also congratulated the management and staff of UPM on their success in being ranked 143rd in the QS World University Ranking 2022, and in maintaining its position as one of the best universities in Malaysia as well as being ranked 27th in the UI-GreenMetric World University Ranking 2021.
