Solutions to overcome flood woes ready in March — MB

By Mustakim Ramli

GOMBAK, Jan 24 — The Selangor government will unveil its preventive measures to overcome the problem of floods this coming March, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said the matter would be tabled during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly after the assessment of the proposals is finalised next month.

“Efforts to develop a drainage system that is more efficient in accommodating high water value and increase in rainfall is part of our long-term solution.

“The plan will be presented end of February during a retreat session and will be announced in March during the Selangor state assembly sitting,” he said when met after the distribution of aid by the Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, at Surau Malabar Hidayatul Islam in Selayang here, yesterday.

Amirudin said the Selangor administration would also focus on providing aid to farmers and small business traders affected by the flood last December.

He said the assistance would be channelled after the RM1,000 under the Bantuan Selangor Bangkit (BSB) and the school aid initiatives are completed.

On January 8, Amirudin had stated that the state government would be reviewing various short- and long-term proposals to tackle flood issues in Selangor.

He said the proposals are compiled by state executive officer for infrastructure Izham Hashim, focusing on critical areas such as Taman Sri Muda.

The suggestions include those from the Drainage and Irrigation Department, Selangor Water Management Authority and several private sectors.

The two-day torrential rain from December 17, 2021, had resulted in double the rainfall compared to the previous high of 180 millimetres and caused severe flooding in several locations in the state.
