Survey: 62 pct of Klang flood victims go back to normal, under a month later

SHAH ALAM, Jan 28 — A survey by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has discovered a majority of the flood victims in Klang have since returned to their daily life routines, less than a month after floods struck the district on December 18 last year.

In a newsletter, DOSM said 62 per cent of residents have gone back to normal, 15.3 per cent will take between one to three months to do so, 12.8 per cent between three to six months, and 9.9 per cent will take over six months.

The survey, conducted from January 10 to January 14, also discovered that:

⦁ Overall damages amounted to RM14,058, with 32.7 per cent under RM5,000, 30 per cent between RM5,000 to RM9,999, and 22.5 per cent between RM10,000 to RM19,999.

⦁ Overall losses resulting from the damage to residences is RM7,627, with 66 per cent under RM5,000, 16.2 per cent between RM5,000 to RM9,999, and 10.2 per cent between RM10,000 to RM19,999.


⦁ Overall losses caused by damage to vehicles is RM5,355, with 23.4 per cent under RM1,000, 31.8 per cent between RM2,000 to RM2,999, and 15.9 per cent between RM3,000 to RM4,999.

⦁ Overall losses due to furniture damage, electrical appliances, clothing and other objects is RM7,134, with 66 per cent under RM5,000, 16.2 per cent between RM5,000 to RM9,999, and 10.2 per cent between RM10,000 to RM19,999.⦁ Overall costs for post-flood cleanup stands at RM1,179, with 98.4 per cent requiring under RM2,500 to do so, while one per cent more requires over RM10,000.

DOSM also determined that 92 per cent of the flood victims did not have disaster insurance coverage for housing, 86 per cent for vehicular insurance coverage, 99 per cent for home furnishing insurance coverage, and 85 per cent for personal insurance coverage.

The same survey found out that 34.2 per cent have emergency savings of less than RM1,000, while 35.8 per cent have savings between RM1,000 to RM4,999, 11.9 per cent have savings between RM5,000 to RM9,999, and 18.1 per cent have savings of RM10,000 and above.

Other findings revealed during interviews to measure the impact of flood damages indicated:

⦁ 93.2 per cent of respondents require cash aid, while 38.7 per cent require household furnishings.

⦁ 60.9 per cent of residents experienced the flood between one to two days.

⦁ 62.9 per cent faced problems of waters rising above three metres in height.

However, DOSM added the survey is aimed at measuring the impact of the flood on a portion of Klang’s residents and is not an official statistic by the department.
