SHAH ALAM, Jan 16 — The Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia has channelled RM1,000 financial assistance to 3,000 flood victims in Taman Sri Muda, here.

Its deputy chief executive officer Sio Kee Hong said the funds are part of the organisation’s flood aid following its efforts in the cleaning process of flood-hit areas from December 24 to 26 last year.

“During the cleanup operation, we saw the trouble that the victims face with the total loss of household items and vehicles, including submerged motorcycles.

“Therefore today (yesterday), we provide them with some cash assistance to help them buy basic needs. Aside from easing their burden, it’s a sign of compassion among the people of this country,” he said during a press conference after distributing the aid at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Khe Beng in Section 32 here, yesterday.

Sio said the organisation expects some 16,000 flood victims to receive the assistance, including those outside Selangor.

“We are starting from those in Taman Sri Muda. After this, we will move to Hulu Langat and also Pahang.

“The recipients were identified from a census carried out. All of the victims, regardless of religion or race, will receive the aid,” he said.

Meanwhile, business tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan had also in last December lent a helping hand alongside the volunteers in assisting the flood-affected residents in Taman Sri Muda.

“I cannot offer full support to all, but I try to help as best as I can to those in need. To see the condition of the homes due to the floods have touched me,” he said when met.

The heavy monsoon rain on December 17 and 18 last year, which was equal to the average rainfall for a month, had caused several states, including Selangor and Pahang, to be badly hit by floods.

The state government and Federal agencies had mobilised their assets, including firefighters, police and the army, to relocate the flood victims and distribute aid.
