HULU LANGAT, Jan 2 — The state government’s initiative to exempt flood victims from having to pay their water bills has come as a relief for residents whose homes were affected by the recent floods, as they do not have to factor that as a cost during the post-flood recovery efforts.
Nooraseha Mohd Yahaya, 37, said the work to clear her home and mud-covered vehicles requires considerable use of water, which has an impact on the monthly bills.
“Thankfully the Selangor government has provided a month’s exemption from paying the water bill, so we do not have to worry about high charges.
“This has greatly helped us, as we must bear the costs for other expenditures, such as replacing damaged furniture,” said the mother of three when met outside her home at Kampung Jawa Batu 18.
For Hasbi Ayan, 50, the money that is saved from the water bill exemption will be used to buy necessities or to replace goods damaged during the floods.
“For the cleaning work, we need to use a lot of water to clear our homes and ensure any items that were unscathed can be properly cleaned.
“As such the bills we face will be quite high, so when there is an exemption we can save on it to buy necessities,” said the Kampung Jawa Batu 18 resident.
On December 21, the state government announced a RM100 million fund to kickstart the
Selangor Bangkit programme, following the heavy floods that hit the state a fortnight before.
