SUBANG JAYA, Feb 15 — The 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) will become a benchmark and proof of the state government’s capabilities in developing the country’s sports programmes.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said Selangor has always been committed to organising prestigious sports events and making them successful by attracting participation from foreign countries.

“The 2022 BATC is another proof that Selangor has always wanted to be the best. We expect the matches will be intense because the four teams that make it to the semi-finals will get automatic entry to the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals scheduled in Bangkok, Thailand in May,” he said at the BATC official dinner here yesterday.

He said the many countries could not participate in BATC due to the Covid-19 outbreak and containment measures implemented.

Thus, Amirudin reminded participants, officials and spectators to abide by the rules and standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the championships.

“The organisers had strived to ensure that everyone involved will be in a safe environment,” he said.

The six-day tournament starting today at the Setia City Convention Centre, Shah Alam is sponsored by the Selangor government and subsidiaries including the Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI.

The other sponsors are Invest Selangor, KDEB Waste Management, Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad, Kumpulan Hartanah Selangor Berhad and Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd.

This is the first time Selangor hosted BATC which was coordinated by the Selangor State Sports Council in collaboration with Badminton Asia and the Badminton Association of Malaysia.

The matches featuring Malaysia, Indonesia, India, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan will also be broadcast live on Astro.
