Local councils proposed to add more Ramadan bazaar sites in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Feb 18 — The Selangor government has proposed to the local authorities in the state to identify new areas to hold Ramadan bazaars in addition to the existing locations, Sinar Harian reported yesterday.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the additional locations are required to meet the condition of physical distancing.

“This is also in line with standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Health Ministry (MOH) and the National Security Council (NSC),” he was quoted by the Malay daily.

Ng also stated the arrival and exiting of visitors and vendors to the Ramadan bazaars should be monitored and coordinated to avoid congestion during peak hours.

He said the move was made as the Selangor government does not want to restrict small traders’ activities while the country is still in economic recovery.

“This matter was discussed during the Local Government Standing Committee Meeting on Monday, which was attended by the mayor and the president of the respective city, municipal and district councils,” he said.

He added that 11,700 bazaar sites were prepared last year. However, this year is still in the final assessment of the local authorities, taking into account the latest developments in the Covid-19 transmission of the variant Omicron in the state.
