More incentives needed to help SMI entrepreneurs go digital

By Zareef Muzammil

PETALING JAYA, Feb 9 — Putrajaya has been urged to provide more incentives to shift entrepreneurs, especially those in the small and medium-sized industries (SMI) to embrace digitalisation.

State executive councillor for trade and industry Dato’ Teng Chang Khim said the move should not be delayed as industry players need to quickly adapt to digital technology to remain competitive.

“We need to accelerate the use of the latest technology including the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) without delay. More initiatives for SMIs or other bigger enterprises are needed from the (Federal) government.

“There are so many things that needed to be considered and work to be done to fix this institution, including improving the digital infrastructure,” he said at the state-level Chinese New Year Dinner at the Sheraton Hotel last night.

Also present were Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and wife Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad, as well as Invest Selangor Berhad chief executive officer Dato’ Hasan Azhari Idris.

Meanwhile, Teng acknowledged that the country has many skilled workers that helped maintained its economic sustainability and that advantage cannot be lost to the competitors.

He also informed that Malaysia is way behind its neighbouring countries in terms of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows despite having advantages.

“This situation is real. This has happened for four years in a row,” he added.
