More sporting events to be held in districts, involve foreign participants – Exco

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Feb 16 — The Selangor government will organise various medium-scale sports tournaments at the district level starting this year and targeting participation from abroad.

State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said the initiative to invigorate sports in the state will be in cooperation with Tourism Selangor and held in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Once the 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) concludes, we will start touring the districts to organise sports tournaments but also make it international by involving foreign participants.

“The objective is to revive the spirits of sports in accordance with the theme of ‘Selangor Bangkit’ introduced by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari,” he said when met during 2022 BATC at the Setia City Convention Centre near here last night.

Commenting further, Mohd Khairuddin said Selangor has always taken steps forward to develop the sports industry despite facing SOP constraints following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“If possible, we do not want this industry to die. As such, we are always looking for new areas to enter in order to develop Selangor sports.

“We cannot wait for decisions from the Youth and Sports Ministry alone (to organise sports events). That is why we take any opportunity available for sports development,” he added.
