Mosti targets 5,000 startups by 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) aims to create over 5,000 startups and five “unicorns” through its MYStartup programme by the end of 2025.

Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim said the MYStartup initiative wants to strengthen the startup ecosystem in the country with an allocation of RM20 million as announced in Budget 2022.

He said there were other programmes for startups such as MYHackathon 2022, MYStartup Pre-Accelerator, MYStartup Accelerator, and MYStartup Mentorship, in line with the Keluarga Malaysia concept.

“Before this initiative, we had launched the Malaysian Startup Ecosystem Roadmap (SUPER) 2021-2030. MYStartup is a very important portal because it enables access to information that can be shared by all stakeholders in the startup ecosystem, apart from being part of SUPER.

“This cradle is a focal point for the startup ecosystem which has been mandated to ensure that the strategy will benefit the overall ecosystem,” he told reporters after launching the MYStartup programme here today.

Ahmad Amzad said the programme is expected to guide startups that need support and help them to be more competitive, adding that MYStartup is an important initiative under the SUPER plan to strengthen the startup ecosystem in the country.

“The first phase of the (SUPER) plan from 2021 dan 2022 is to generate the growth of startups, the second phase from 2023 to 2025 aims to expand the startup ecosystem while the third phase from 2026 to 2030 is where we start to take steps to be startup leaders,” he explained. “One of Mosti’s missions is to place Malaysia among the top 20 global startup ecosystems by 2030, at present we are currently ranked 47th to 48th.”

Meanwhile, startups, investors, ecosystem builders and other industry players are encouraged to register at the MYStartup platform at www.mystartup.gov.my so that they can have access to resources as well as information on developments in the startup ecosystem in the country.
