Nadma D-G: Maeps PKRC to reopen in smaller capacity

SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 — The Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (Maeps) will be reopened in the nearest future, but in a smaller capacity than before.

Berita Harian reported National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) director-general Datuk Aminuddin Hassim as saying the PKRC Maeps will likely only fit 850 Covid-19 patients, compared to the previous capacity of 5,000 patients before the centre closed on February 8.

“The government is proposing to rearrange the strategy for PKRC Maeps, including changing the location of the original block that was used before.

“In short, PKRC will still be at Maeps, but the area size, building, function, and personnel teams will be different, as will the number of patients which will be smaller and easier to manage.

“We expect (the PKRC) to be ready in the nearest future,” he said when contacted earlier today.

Throughout its 14 months of operation, approximately 166,072 Covid-19 patients were treated at PKRC Maeps 2.0, which alleviated the burden on hospitals in the Peninsular.

Aminuddin said the PKRC is being planned to be used to treat Covid-19 patients on the state level, hence why the building size will not be as large as PKRC Maeps 2.0.

He added that Nadma is ready to assist the Health Ministry in handling any increase in cases at all 43 PKRC in the state.

Earlier on, a Facebook status by the Kajang Municipal Council went viral, when its team was seen rearranging the facilities in PKRC Maeps’ Hall A.

Yesterday Malaysia recorded 31,199 new Covid-19 cases, making it the highest number of cases recorded in the country since the pandemic began.
