Selangor plans to organise international sports summit this year

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Feb 16 — Selangor is making plans to host the International Sports Summit in September this year to bring together sportsmen and industry players from around the world.

State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said proposal papers on it are being prepared by the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS).

“I have asked the Selangor MSN executive director (Mohamad Nizam Marjugi) to prepare several proposal papers for us to host this international event.

“Insya Allah (God willing), we will also work with associations such as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) who are committed to assisting in its implementation,” he said when met at the 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) at the Setia City Convention Centre near here last night.

Mohd Khairuddin added that the summit will be a continuation of the state’s success in hosting BATC through the cooperation of the parties involved.

“Thus with the support of the state government and Menteri Besar (Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari), we have full confidence to move on to host a bigger event than this (BATC),” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khairuddin said the first day of BATC yesterday went smoothly in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

He said the attendance of spectators was encouraging and more is expected to come during the six-day tournament.

“The running of the tournament is very satisfactory even under strict SOP management. In fact, our organisation of this event is now on par with international standards,” he told Selangorkini.

At the same time, Mohd Khairuddin said he has asked the BAC to consider allowing more spectators to enter to watch the tournament.

“This venue has the capacity to accommodate up to 1,500 people but MOH (Health Ministry) and BAC only allow a certain percentage of people to enter. So, we need to study this,” he said.

This is the first time Selangor is hosting BATC which is coordinated by MSNS in collaboration with Badminton Asia and BAM.
