Selangor to sell 50,000 chicken at RM8 per kg starting Monday

SHAH ALAM, Feb 5 — Selangor will start selling standard chicken at the ceiling price of RM8 per kilogramme (kg) for two weeks, beginning Monday to alleviate the burden faced by the people following the hike in essential goods prices.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said 50,000 chicken will be sold at the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation’s Wisma PKPS in Shah Alam and Pasar Borong Selangor in Seri Kembangan.

He said the initiative under the Ehsan Food Price Intervention Programme with a total allocation of RM1 million will be extended to other state and parliamentary constituencies should it receive a good response from the public.

“For the first round, we are limiting only two chickens for each buyer. We do not want the sales being manipulated for commercial purposes.

“The state has enough supply of chicken as our farms could produce up to 540,000 chicken for three months,” he said when launching the programme at Wisma PKPS here today.

He said throughout the programme, PKPS will also sell vegetables and eggs at a price that is lower than the current market price.

Meanwhile, Amirudin added that Selangor citizens need not worry about the chicken supply for the upcoming Ramadan and Aidilfitri months as it is sufficient for the time being.

“The main problem is the price as it involves the raw materials needed to feed the animal, hence we need to tackle the core issue first.

“InsyaAllah (God willing) the supply is sufficient in Selangor, we just need to ensure the prices does not go up too high as the increase in prices of goods would cause difficulties to the people,” he said.
